We've all dreamed about reeling in one of these powerful, beautiful silver gamefish we call Permit. This member of the jack family is know to grow up to 40 or 50 pounds, but most commonly are caught in the 20-25 pound range. The Florida State record for Permit is a whopping 56 pounds!

Permit are normally found on shallow tropical climate flats either alone or in small schools. Larger schools of these fish congregate to spawn offshore. Permit produce and shed eggs more than once a year and spawning takes place over reef structure in up to 100 feet.

Permit are known for their impeccable strength and long runs. They are one of the most sought after gamefish, and are extremely challenging to catch on artificial baits. Permit are targeted offshore on wrecks or on shallow water flats using light tackle spinning gear or fly tackle on shallow flats. Common bait choices include small live crabs, live shrimp, or dead crabs.
